Richard W. Verge

South Hampton – Richard W. Verge, 77, of South Hampton died in a tragic accident at his home on July 29, 2023.  He was born April 13, 1946, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the son of the late Wallace C. and Helen (Brewer) Verge.

Richard was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts and graduated from Melrose High School.  During his youth, he was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  He was also an accomplished athlete in football and hockey and was later inducted into the Melrose High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on attend, on an athletic scholarship, and graduate from Middlebury College in Vermont, where he continued to play football, hockey, and lacrosse.  He was involved on campus, as a member of a fraternity and on the athletic field, and was named the Middlebury Man of the Year, during his time at the College.

He owned and operated Richard W. Verge Carpenter and Builders for over 30 years and made his home in South Hampton since the early 1970s.  Richard, a talented woodworker and carpenter, was meticulous in his work and took great pride in his business. While living in South Hampton, he was active in the town, serving on several committees, most recently the ZBA, and as the Building Inspector, for a 10-year tenure following his retirement.

Richard was an incredibly proud father and grandfather and was very involved in his children’s and grandsons’ lives.  He never missed helping with a class project, attending a school event, cheering at a sports game, teaching an important skill or life lesson, or celebrating his children’s and grandchildren’s achievements. He enjoyed working on projects—of his own and to help his children and neighbors—and could reliably be found in his workshop or fastidiously taking care of his home, barn and yard.  In his retirement, he became an avid reader and supporter of his local library, and always looked forward to traveling with his wife.  He loved dining in restaurants, a good Harvey Wallbanger and his wife’s special Mudslides, and never passed on indulging in anything that was chocolate.  Richard was a devoted friend to many and always made time to help those he cared for; he touched countless lives and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny Todd; his son Jacob Verge, and his wife Mary of East Kingston, and daughter Natalie Verge of Seabrook; his two grandsons, Nathan and Andrew; his sister, Susan Vets, and her husband Bob; his twin brother Robert, and his wife Rita; and extended family, including several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister Mary (Judy) Barton.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 8th from 5-7 PM at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.  A celebration of his life will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 9th at 11 AM. Private burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Newton, at a later date.  In lieu of flowers and  traditional remembrances, donations may be made to the South Hampton Public Library (3 Hilldale Avenue, South Hampton, NH 03827) or a charity of your choice.
